The Death of Meghan's Rescue Beagle
A postscript to my "Royals Extra" yesterday on Meghan and the Duchess of Windsor
In her new Instagram account today, Meghan Markle announced the death of Guy, the beagle she rescued from a shelter in 2015. I took note of Guy’s two appearances in the trailer for the upcoming Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, on my “Royals Extra” just yesterday: Meghan Channels Wallis—and Comes Up Short.
I wrote that I was pleased to see Guy “looking happy and healthy,” so I thought it only right to mark Meghan’s announcement of his death. Here is a link to a complete account on DailyMail.com
Her Instagram tribute contains more than twenty photos as well as a half dozen videos including the sound of her voice as well as that of Harry and their son Archie. The video ends with Archie singing a duet with his mother, “We love you Guy oh yes we do…When you’re not near us, we’re blue.” She mentioned “many years of unconditional love,” but she didn’t give Guy’s age. I know how hard it is to deal with the death of a much-loved pet, so I sympathize with her loss and hope she is well comforted in her grief.
A “play date” reunion in Malibu
As I mentioned in “Royals Extra” yesterday, the sight of Guy in the preview of With Love, Meghan brought up some strong emotions about Bogart, a mixed breed dog Meghan rescued as a six-week-old puppy in December 2012. After she and Harry were engaged in November 2017, she left five-year-old Bogart behind in Toronto (where she had been filming Suits, her cable TV show) and took Guy with her to Britain. I have always had a special interest in Bogart, since my younger son adopted his brother, Otto, a day before Meghan picked up Bogart. The two dogs even had a “play date” reunion in Malibu organized by Meghan in February 2013. I wrote about Otto and Bogart, as well as Guy, in a “Royals Extra” on December 7, 2023, that you can find here: The enduring mystery of Bogart, the dog Meghan Markle adopted eleven years ago this week.
Meghan’s tribute photographs of Guy with her other dogs, Pula and Momma Mia, are everywhere online. “I have cried too many tears to count,” she wrote, and she described all the moments she had shared with Guy: “He was with me at Suits, when I got engaged, (and then married), when I became a mom…he was with me for everything: the quiet, the chaos, the calm, the comfort.”
Her “sweetest boys”
But she neither mentioned nor showed Bogart in her announcement. I thought it fitting to share several photos of Guy with Bogart that I captured on Meghan’s original Instagram account that she closed on becoming engaged to Harry. I’ve also included an image of my son, David, with his beloved Otto, who had terminal cancer and died in his arms last February at age eleven.
